Brentwood Luminary Night

| Comments (4)

One of my favorite nights of the year is almost here. The annual Brentwood Luminary Night is scheduled for December 10th this year (always the second Saturday in December). On this night, most all of the subdivisions in Brentwood participate in this tradition that was started here in the 1980s.

Of course the tradition of lighting luminaries (or "little lights") was not started here, I found some conflicting information on the origin of this practice - so I'll be very general and say it is a Mexican Christmas Tradition. What did originate here in Brentwood in the 1980s was that an entire subdivision would participate. Now it has spread outside of one subdivision and the night is for all Brentwood residents.

Last year was our first December living in Brentwood, so I didn't know what to expect. We took a walk around the neighborhood that night and found that there were more homes participating then we would have thought there would be. Very pretty. I wish I had some pictures to post here, but I didn't take any. I'll get some this year for sure.

If you're interested in participating, contact your neighborhood homeowners association and see if they can give you some additional information. In case you need to make your own, click here for instructions (although the fancy colored bags are not necessary, the brown lunch bags work perfectly). Place the bags in your yard along the street, leaving about 10 feet between each bag.

Enjoy!

Abby,
I am from Virginia Beach, VA and am working on establishing a luminary tradition (named Share Your Light Night - aka SYLNight) for our City and found that the event is growing nationally. Could you share with me contact information for the individuals who organize the luminary tradition in Brentwood? I'd like to get some pointers and perhaps partner, recognize and support each perspective display. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Last year I visited during Luminary Night and to be honest I'd never seen anything like it. A very relaxing and pretty site. I wish more neighborhoods did something like this. I know up here in the Chicagoland area nothing like that happens.

Bobby,
I live in Virginia Beach and following your comment left a few years ago about Brentwoods Luminary night, wonder if you have started a tradition in your own neighborhood? If not, would you consider doing so. I have started it in the whole city of Virginia Beach, VA and it, in it's first year, was held in 15 neighborhoods. This year, we hope to reach 20... I will help with directing what we are doing to make the event a success. At the beginning, it's as easy as having yourself and three other neighbors seed the event. However, if you work with your civic league, homeowner's association or neighborhood watch group to spread the event. In addition, contacting the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts can help promote the event.

Please email or call me to discuss what might be possible. 757-714-2772 or shareyourlightnight@yahoo.com
