My Best Buy Geek Squad Experience

The battery was shot; the hinge, cracked; and it had taken to cutting off at odd intervals.

Enter the Best Buy Geek Squad.

Here’s my experience with Best Buy’s extended warranty repair of a Gateway laptop in Brentwood, Tennessee.

Luckily, I still had a few months on the Gateway laptop’s extended warranty.

Thank goodness! 

The total repair bill was $100 more than the warranty originally cost us.

But the hardest part was surrendering the laptop to the Geek Squad in the first place! 

I waited in line for almost half an hour.  Then, a white-shirted Geek took a short inventory of my computer.  I filled out a lot of paperwork while he struggled with the printer.

Not a good sign!

However, the young man was exceedingly polite and assured me the laptop would get a new battery (included in my warranty) and a new hinge.  He also suspected it would need a new hard drive.

It did.  He offered to back up my hard drive for an additional $99. 

10 days later a computerized voice called to tell me the laptop was ready.  Hallelujah! I drove to Best Buy in Cool Springs immediately.  Soon I would be back on my beloved Internet!

Then I waited.  And waited.  And waited until I got to the front of the line.

"Oh, my computer is NOT ready yet?  They are still loading the operating system?"

Rats!  I had to kill another hour in the parking lot with a sleeping kid before I finally got my computer back.

Conclusion:  I would give the Best Buy Geek Squad a B+ for service.  They’re courteous and earnest, but not too quick.  On the other hand, I do have a practically new laptop after 2 years of hard use.

  1. These are the most incompetent people I’ve ever dealt with. My computer (Gateway tower) got loaded with spyware to the point where it just wouldn’t function. Took it in there, they cleaned it off, sent it home, told me all was good. Two days later, blue screen crash. Took it back, they took the hard drive out, put it in another machine, said it was fine and handed it back. My friend, who is a musician, so also a techy type, turned the hard drive over and it was MELTED. M.E.L.T.E.D. Nobody at Best Buy turned the thing over and actually gave it a look. It was hours away from starting a house fire.

    Two weeks after a new hard drive, Windows is now telling me that the version that was installed was not valid and is asking me for a Product Key, which Best Buy can’t give me because they can’t find my paperwork, so it’s gotten more viruses because I can’t download any new virus software until the windows issue is resolved.

    You are better off throwing your computer out the window and starting new than taking it there.
