Who knew that Lent comes so early in 2008?
With Easter on March 23rd, Ash Wednesday caught me off guard.
Here's what you need to know about the 2008 Lenten calendar and where you can attend an Ash Wednesday service in Brentwood, Tennessee.
In 2008, Easter Sunday falls on March 23.
That makes Ash Wednesday THIS Wednesday, February 6th.
Only one more day to prepare!
Mardis Gras, also called Shrove Tuesday, is traditionally the one last celebration before the relative deprivation of Lent. The faithful would use up all sweets and fats before fasting.
Lent lasts 40 days. The Sunday before Easter is called Palm Sunday. In 2008 Palm Sunday falls on March 16.
Lent is broken by Good Friday (March 21, 2008).
Brentwood's Catholic church, Holy Family, holds Ash Wednesday Masses at the following times:
- 9 am – Mass & Distribution of Ashes
- 5:30 pm – Liturgy of Word & Distribution of Ashes
- 7 pm – Mass & Distribution of Ashes
Residents of the western side of Brentwood can attend Ash Wednesday Mass at St. Matthew Church on Sneed Road at 8 am and 7 pm.
Anyone can attend Ash Wednesday at a Catholic church and receive the traditional cross of ashes on the forehead (though only Catholics partake in communion.)
