Country star Martina McBride, who had never heard the song, admitted to being "a little worried" at first. After she heard Melinda Doolittle rehearse, though, McBride changed her tune...

It was bound to happen sooner or later. In American Idol's Top 8 episode, Melinda Doolittle received her first "thumbs down" from Simon Cowell.

So when Melinda Doolittle rehearsed "Heaven Knows" by Donna Summers, guess what Gwen Stefani had to say:

"She blew me away. Amazing performance, beautiful and kind of mindblowing."

"I would say good luck, but I don't think she's going to need it."

Brentwood's Melinda Doolittle was a stunning finale to American Idol's Top 11 episode.

I'll admit, I was a little worried when I saw the British Invasion theme--but Melinda's soulful touch to "As Long As He Needs Me" made all the difference.

As did her fresh new look...

Brentwood's Melinda Doolittle met one of her own idols on American Idol's Top 12 episode. Diana Ross was guest and musical inspiration for the night.

"I am an old school girl at heart," Melinda confessed about the Motown star.

When Melinda Doolittle sang Diana Ross, she--and at least one of the judges--broke down in tears...

American Idol's Melinda Doolittle belted out "I'm A Woman" on the Top 8 Girls show tonight. Once again, the judges had nothing but compliments.
