Seinfeld's Deceptively Delicous Cookbook

| Comments (1)

jessica-seinfield-plagiarism.jpgHave you heard the controversy surrounding Jessica Seinfeld's Oprah-endorsed cookbook, Deceptively Delicious?

According to Yahoo Buzz, allegations of plagiarism have surfaced. Several Seinfeld recipes resemble those in a similar cookbook, The Sneaky Chef by Missy Chase Levine.

I'm sure I'm not the only Brentwood mom whose kids love chicken fingers and macaroni above all else!

Here are links to free Deceptively Delicious recipes--as well as local Brentwood produce places--so you can see what all the fuss is about.

So did Seinfeld deceive her readers like she deceives her children's palates?

Take the taste test!

Here are links to the recipes Jessica Seinfeld shared on Oprah:

Scrambled eggs with cauliflower
Pancakes with sweet potato puree
Chicken nuggets with broccoli
Macaroni and cheese with squash or cauliflower
Italian meatloaf with carrot
Quesadillas with butternut squash
Blueberry oatmeal bars with spinach
Chocolate cake with beets
Brownies with carrot and spinach

I don't think Seinfeld wrote this cookbook without help, but I don't think she plagiarized the recipes, either. She has much more to lose by plagiarism than she has coming from potential cookbook revenues. She is married to one of the richest men in Hollywood!

After all, the concept of pureed foods isn't new. Any Internet search turns up dozens of similar ideas. I've been sneaking veggies into tomato sauces and meatloaf since I've had a toddler.

In the end, Seinfeld "makes" the book with her celebrity status. No other pureed food cookbook would have made it on Oprah!

This Brentwood mom's vegetable strategy?

  • Expose children to a wide variety of fresh produce.

  • Let them choose new fruits and vegetables whenever you grocery shop.

  • Allow them to try and try and try until they find something they like.

  • Sneaking is great, but at some point, children need to develop an independent sense of taste.

(And yes, my kids still love mac 'n cheese, but they also wolf down spinach pizza, broccoli, and cauliflower. Go figure!)

Here are Brentwood resources for finding the best fresh vegetables for your kids--whether you puree them or not!
