Nashville's Cheapest Building Materials
Brentwood residents spend a LOT of money keeping up--and improving--our homes. Judging from the traffic, Home Depot and Lowe's might be Brentwood's #1 weekend destinations!
But what if you could buy discount building materials right on Franklin Road--and help local families build a home with every purchase?
Nashville area Habitat for Humanity HomeStores are the answer.
Here's why my family always checks Habitat HomeStore before Home Depot:
Savaged building materials save money:
We needed a full-glass exterior door for our home. Home Depot could order the cheapest model for $175, plus tax. We found a similar salvaged door at Habitat. Price? $30.

Here we are, strapping our fabulous "new" door into the station wagon.
We've learned to bring a truck or wagon, tie-down straps, and padding whenever we shop for salvaged building materials.
Salvaged building materials means more quality for the money:
Habitat Homestore sells windows, cabinets, and doors salvaged from expensive homes in Belle Meade and Green Hills. We bought an Anderson double-casement window for the price of a cheap vinyl version.

I spotted this granite countertop and sink for only $35.
Even though it's chipped on one corner, it would still be amazing in a laundry room or outdoor potting area.
Go green by reusing items which are still good:
Salvaged building materials save energy, resources, and space in our landfills. Nashville Habitat Homestore sells good quality, leftover paints for $5 a gallon.
You never know what unusual items you'll spot at Habitat's Homestores, like these vintage roof corners and tiles.
Habitat Homestore uses its profits to build new homes for people in our community. Your building material donations AND purchases directly help local families.
Look at this charming cast-iron fire basket.
It reminds me of Restoration Hardware's fireplace accessories, only authentic--and 1/4 the price!
HOW DO I FIND THE CLOSEST HABITAT HOMESTORE?
Brentwood is close to 2 Habitat HomeStores:
- Nashville's Habitat HomeStore is located on Franklin Road/8th Avenue, between Wedgewood and downtown. A second building around the corner on Division Street houses the bigger building materials.
- Franklin's Habitat for Humanity has just moved its Renovation Station on Eddy Ct. to Cool Springs, on Baker's Bridge Road.
- Murfreesboro, Lebanon, and Cookeville also have Habitat Homestores.
--->Habitat For Humanity's website has a complete listing of all Homestores, nation-wide.
Tips for shopping at Habitat HomeStores:
- Pricing at Habitat Homestores is highly variable. Some things are bargains, some are not.
- New inventory arrives daily. You never know what you will find, so check often!
- Bring your measurements! The Nashville HomeStore offers a 30 day return policy, but this is rare.
thanks again meredith! here's the link to the post i just did that you inspired here. have a great weekend.
whoa! great tip meredith! i've never heard of these stores.
you are so right about salvaged materials. recycling is great, but reusing is better! can't wait to venture down to the habitat homestore to hunt for supplies to complete all those projects i want to tackle, but don't b/c "i don't have the money right now".
i'm gonna pick this up at my blog, The Fun Times Guide to Living Green--hopefully later today.
