Sports Fan Etiquette

Merriam-Webster defines the word etiquette as 'the conduct or procedure required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be observed in social or official life'

I'm not sure if I need to be that formal for our purposes here, but I have to say that the Cincinnati Bengal fans that I saw at the Tennessee Titan's game on Sunday are not familiar with the word.

Before I upset everyone - let me say that I'm sure there are thousands of Bengals fans and residents of Cincinnati who are fine people. The ones I have a problem with were the seven who were sitting in front of us. I can only hope that they had a designated driver sitting somewhere in another section, because I didn't see anyone in their group who was suitable to be behind the wheel of an automobile.

They were drunk, rude, and completely disrespectful to those of us who were sitting in their area. I'm a sports fan, so I can completely understand being enthusiastic for your team. However, when your actions ruin the experience of everyone else around you - I have a problem with it. I'm not educated in the fine points of fan etiquette, but I do have a few tips to remember:

  • Don't have more to drink than you can handle. If you're spending more money on beer than you make in a week - stop.
  • If your team is losing - don't taunt the fans of the team that is winning, because you look ridiculous.
  • If your team is winning - be a good sport and be quiet. Be the better man (or woman) and accept your good fortune graciously.
  • If you feel the need to use four-letter words at a high volume, please don't. The young children around you will learn bad manners, and they're the ones who will take care of you when you get old.

I'm sure everyone heard about the melee at the game last November between the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons. One of my favorite sports writers, Mitch Albom, wrote a list of his own. Read that list HERE.

On a somewhat related item, Mitch Albom was also the author of the book 'Tuesdays with Morrie'. This is a fantastic book that points out the important things in life....and it's short, so it's perfect reading for MY life.
